Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It is recommended, but not mandatory, that candidates pass Phase 1 before proceeding to Phase 2. It is expected that most candidates will attempt Phase 1 before they are eligible to take Phase 2. Candidates may elect to take both phases in the same year, provided the criteria for both examinations are met.

You must have completed at least 12 months of residency training by 1st March of the year of the exam. This applies to both Standard and Alternative training programmes.

This is after completion of the Residency. All criteria outlined in section 5.2 of the Information Brochure must be met.

Phase 1

A candidate can re-take Phase 1 once per year.

Phase 2

A candidate can re-take Phase 2 once per year. If a candidate passes one section of Phase 2, they do not have to re-take this section if they have already passed Phase 1 and achieved more than 30% in all failed sections.  If they have not yet passed Phase 1, then the entire Phase 2 Examination must be re-taken. If a candidate passes two or three sections of Phase 2, they do not have to re-take those sections if they have achieved more than 30% in all failed sections.

For each phase, four attempts are allowed, and both Phase 1 and Phase 2 must be completed and passed within eight years after the completion of the residency training programme

No. Your publications must be verified first. Once you have successfully passed the full Examination, you must submit Form 1.5.1 (Application Form for New Diplomates) [link here] to the Diplomate Certification Committee.

There are no such plans currently. This is due to limitations of available digital platforms; continuity of examination provision; issues of material storage and security; and because not all residents have routine access to digital platforms. However, it is possible that the mock exam at the Summer School may be digital in the near future.
